MINNEAPOLIS — Two Minneapolis police officers were shot and multiple other people were injured in a shooting in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. The suspect was also killed.

A law enforcement source told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that at least two people were dead after at least six people — including two police officers — were shot. The suspect died by suicide.

One officer was shot in the stomach and another was shot in the leg, according to a city hall source. A source close to the situation confirmed one officer was in surgery as of early evening, while the other officer's injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

What Happened

The incident began when Minneapolis police were called to an apartment building near 15 East Grant Street, near the intersection of Nicollet Avenue and East Grant Street in the Loring Park area of downtown Minneapolis.

When officers entered the building, the shooter opened fire on them, according to the source.

Massive Response

The shooting triggered a massive emergency response. ATF agents, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office officials, Minneapolis police officers, and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension officials were all at the scene.

The Hyatt Regency hotel was placed on lockdown. Metro Transit canceled northbound Route 10 trips departing from Leamington Ramp. People were asked to avoid the area of 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South.

The shooting occurred in the vicinity of Loring Towers, a large apartment complex near the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Officer Conditions

Both officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center. One officer was reported in surgery as of early evening. The other officer's injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Breaking News

This is a developing story. Multiple news crews are at the scene. Updates will be provided as more information is confirmed by the Minneapolis Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
