Cincinnati, Ohio — January 5, 2026 - A man was taken into custody early Monday morning after several windows were smashed at the Cincinnati residence of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight at Vance's home in the East Walnut Hills neighborhood. U.S. Secret Service agents, assigned to protect the property, physically detained the suspect before handing him over to Cincinnati police.
"The U.S. Secret Service is coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office as charging decisions are reviewed," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. The agency described the damage as including "breaking windows on the exterior of a personal residence associated with the Vice President."

Local news crews on the scene observed multiple shattered windows with large holes, and officers documented the damage for several hours. Preliminary reports indicate the suspect did not enter the home.
Vice President Vance and his family were not in Cincinnati at the time, having returned to Washington, D.C. A spokesperson for Vance confirmed the family was safe and already out of town before the incident.
Vance had spent the previous week in Cincinnati but departed Sunday afternoon. Heightened security measures around the home, including road closures, had been in place until January 4 due to recent events.
