Euphoria Star’s Voter Registration Fuels Debate Amid American Eagle Ad Controversy

Los Angeles, California -
Sydney Sweeney, the 27-year-old actress known for her roles in *Euphoria* and *The White Lotus*, has ignited a heated online debate after public voter records revealed she registered as a Republican in Florida in June 2024. The disclosure, first reported by BuzzFeed and confirmed by multiple outlets including Newsweek, comes as Sweeney faces backlash over a controversial American Eagle advertisement, amplifying scrutiny of her political affiliations.

According to Florida Department of State voter records, a Sydney B. Sweeney, matching the actress’s middle name Bernice and her recent purchase of a $13.5 million mansion in Summerland Key, registered as an active Republican voter in Monroe County on June 14, 2024. The timing of her registration, shortly after former President Donald Trump’s criminal conviction in a hush-money trial, has fueled speculation about her political leanings, though Sweeney has not publicly commented on the matter.

The revelation, initially highlighted by X user @time222smoke, has polarized fans and critics. Some expressed shock, given Sweeney’s past social media support for causes like Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ rights, and pro-choice stances. “Sydney Sweeney is MAGAT at the core,” one Reddit user claimed, while another X post read, “She pretends to stand with women, yet votes against their rights.” Conversely, supporters like X user @LucienWolfe11 celebrated the news, writing, “Sydney Sweeney registered Republican? That’s a vibe shift. Hollywood’s worst nightmare is blonde bombshells with GOP voter cards.”

The controversy is compounded by Sweeney’s recent American Eagle campaign, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” which features a genes/jeans pun: “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color… my jeans are blue.” Critics, including a viral TikTok by @thealtperspective with 1.8 million views, accused the ad of promoting eugenics through its emphasis on Sweeney’s blonde hair, blue eyes, and white appearance. Fashion advocate Dr. Brett Staniland told Newsweek the ad’s terminology suggests “a connection to Sydney Sweeney’s appearance being perfect,” raising concerns about racial undertones. American Eagle defended the campaign, stating it was “about the jeans” and Sweeney’s “story,” while White House Communications Director Steven Cheung called the backlash “cancel culture run amok.”

This isn’t Sweeney’s first brush with political controversy. In 2022, she faced criticism for posting photos from her mother’s 60th birthday party in Idaho, where guests wore “Make Sixty Great Again” hats and one appeared in a “Blue Lives Matter” shirt. Sweeney clarified on X, “An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions.” She has since remained largely silent on her personal politics.

The news of Sweeney’s Republican registration has sparked varied reactions. Some conservatives, including Senator Ted Cruz, praised her, with Cruz stating, “The crazy Left has come out against beautiful women.” Others, like X user @thatsKAIZEN, argued the ad controversy signals “the end of cancel culture.” Meanwhile, critics question whether her registration aligns with her public image, with one X user noting, “She still sees what the Republican Party stands for and is like ‘that’s for me.’”

As the online discourse intensifies, Sweeney’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment. The actress, who owns her own production company, continues to work on projects like the upcoming psychological thriller The Housemaid. Whether the controversy will impact her career remains unclear, but American Eagle’s stock reportedly rose 4% after the ad’s launch, suggesting the buzz may benefit the brand. For now, Sweeney remains at the center of a heated intersection of celebrity, politics, and fashion.
