The United States has officially completed its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), effective January 22, 2026, one year after President Trump signed an executive order initiating the process on his first day in office (Jan 20, 2025).

The U.S. cited the WHO's alleged mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic, failure to implement reforms, and political influence from member states as reasons for the decision. All U.S. funding and personnel have been withdrawn, with future cooperation limited to transition matters.

The move leaves the WHO — which the U.S. previously funded at roughly 20% of its budget — without its largest historical contributor. Some reports note outstanding U.S. dues (estimates $130–278 million for 2024–2025), though the administration states no further payments will be made.

WHO officials have described the withdrawal as a loss for global health coordination. The U.S. is the first country to exit the organization since its founding in 1948.
