Charlotte Winstanley, 27, Sentenced to 30 Months for Misconduct in Public Office and Smuggling Contraband

London, United Kingdom – February 3, 2026
– A former prison officer has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting to a prolonged and intimate sexual relationship with a convicted gang member while on duty at HMP Lindholme near Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Charlotte Winstanley, 27, of Coronation Road, Doncaster, began the forbidden affair with inmate Jabhari Blair, 30, shortly after starting her role at the prison. The relationship, described in court as "romantic and intimate," lasted for a significant period—reports varying between three months and three years—and involved weekly "date nights" in locked offices on prison grounds.

According to evidence presented at Sheffield Crown Court, Winstanley smuggled contraband items into the facility for Blair, including a mobile phone, SIM cards, and other prohibited materials. The pair used the phone to exchange explicit photographs and videos. Messages revealed Winstanley's intense infatuation: she boasted to colleagues about having "the best sex ever" daily, described Blair in highly personal terms, and sent texts stating she was "literally praying to have your babies."

The judge, His Honour Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, the Recorder of Sheffield, branded the case as "exceptionally serious" and one of the worst examples of corruption by a prison officer he had encountered. He highlighted the breach of trust, noting that Winstanley had abused her position of authority and potentially compromised prison security by sharing confidential information about searches and transfers with Blair's mother.

Winstanley pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office and transmitting a photograph from inside a prison. Blair, serving a 12-and-a-half-year sentence from 2014 for wounding, robbery, and firearms offenses linked to an organized criminal network, received an additional 13-month term for possessing cannabis, a prohibited phone, and a USB stick.

The sentencing occurred on February 2, 2026, at Sheffield Crown Court. South Yorkshire Police and prison authorities emphasized that such breaches undermine the integrity of the correctional system and pose risks to safety.

This case adds to a pattern of similar incidents involving female prison officers engaging in inappropriate relationships with male inmates, prompting renewed debate over staffing policies in men's prisons. Winstanley has been remanded into custody to begin her sentence immediately.
