Reporter cites "self-feeding speculation" and reputational damage as she steps down following controversy over images with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.

April 14, 2026 — Dianna Russini, a prominent NFL insider for The Athletic, has resigned from her role with the publication amid a developing scandal involving photographs that depicted her closely with New England Patriots head  coach Mike Vrabel. Russini announced her departure in a resignation letter submitted Tuesday, asserting her decision stems from mounting "self-feeding speculation" and reputational damage, rather than any wrongdoing on her part. Her contract was set to conclude on June 30.

In her resignation letter, Russini stated she has maintained professionalism and dedication throughout her career and stands by all her published work. She expressed a refusal to engage further with what she described as a "media frenzy" that is "unmoored from the facts" and continues to escalate without regard for The Athletic's ongoing review process. Russini indicated she does not wish to be subjected to a "public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept," choosing instead to "step aside now."

The controversy originated from photos published by Page Six, showing Russini and Vrabel, both of whom are married to other individuals, at a luxury resort in Arizona. The images depicted what appeared to be an intimate encounter. Both Russini and Vrabel initially downplayed the photos. Russini reportedly characterized the situation as an innocent gathering with friends, while Vrabel was quoted as calling the interpretation of the photos "laughable."

Following the publication of the images, The Athletic, Russini's employer, launched an internal investigation into the matter. This investigation is reportedly continuing despite Russini's resignation. The Athletic initially backed its employee, but the subsequent probe highlights the complexities of navigating journalistic ethics and personal conduct.

Patriots executive Eliot Wolf, EVP of Player Personnel, has stated that head coach Mike Vrabel remains involved in the team's day-to-day operations amidst the controversy. Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 after a tenure at ESPN, and her departure marks a significant development in the ongoing story, which continues to draw media attention and public discussion.
